getting in the spirit

shirt: old navy, sweatshirt: target, coat & shoes: ross, jeans: nordstrom rack

Oh my garsh, it's almost Christmas!!  Aside from watching The Grinch Who Stole Christmas with Sam for approximately the fourth time this month, here are some other things that have been helping me get  into the Christmas spirit...

 Light displays.

The cutest little Christmas towns you ever did see.

Things that are helping Jon but not helping me feel the spirit of Christmas joy:
this guy's dirty 'stache.  This is the beginning of a small, yet disgusting, manly expression of the celebration of the freedom found in Christmas break.

Thank you kind sir for offering to take a picture of my handsome family.  This will definitely be in the running for potential Christmas card pictures this year.  How we all managed to be sneering at the same time... you truly captured a magical moment.

Jon was watching Thor in the living room, I was in the kitchen and it hit me: "How in the world does Thor's brother survive falling off the edge of his magic world at the end of Thor to come back to be the villain in The Avengers??  Totes not even real."
Jon's response: "Loki has lots of magical powers."
Completely deadpan, not even joking.  It was at this moment I realized that I am married to Napoleon Dynamite.  What's next, is he going to tell me that his favorite animal is the liger?

Last night Sam informed me, "You're the boss, but daddy's the good guy".  I am still unsure how I feel about this.

I am the sick one now.  The one moping around, wallowing in self pity.  But somehow it is way less cute when I do it, and about 100% more annoying.  but does this stop me?  absolutely not.

Sam met another milestone this week: shoving inanimate objects into unsuspecting orifaces.
The culprit: a tiny piece of orange peel
The victim: Sam's right nostril
The saving grace: his snotty, runny nose--that little bugger slid right out within a couple of hours

the upside

We had one of 'those' weekends.  You know the kind, when someone is sick, and  fevers & snotty noses make you cry, and even though you get to drink all the juice & watch all the movies you ever wanted, nothing is right with the world.  But in between letting out some good ol' cries conjured purely out of self pity, making sure everybody else wakes up with you & your misery at night, and lamentations of "I'm siiiiiiick.  sick, sick, siiiiiiiiick...", we had a few moments like the one above.  Where my busybody three-year-old was perfectly content to cuddle up on mama's lap and fall asleep.

Wonderful, sweet, toot-less cuddles {even Lucy joined in}.  ahhhh :)
There is always an upside.

a fox

faux fur vest: Kohls, skirt {actually a dress} & turtleneck: Target, boots: Famous Footwear, belt: thrifted

Sam informed me that I look like a fox in this vest.
He then proceeded to pet me.
Now, I'm no scientist, but based on this data,
I'm pretty sure he was talking about the furry mammal kind of fox
and not the pretty lady kind.

old school

I was in my little sister's room the other day and noticed a boombox sitting on her dresser.
A large grey and silver boombox with the remnants of a shiny star sticker on the top.
It was my old boombox, a middle school Christmas dream come true.

So, of course as any good big sister would do, I told her of the good ol' days before mp3 players & ipods with docking stations, and reveled in the glory days of CDs & cassette tapes.  She nodded along politely until something I said seemed to peak her interest.  "You can record songs right off the radio onto a tape??".  Suddenly, I was cooler than Twilight and Harry Potter combined.  After a brief discussion on whether or not you can even buy cassette tapes anymore, she managed to dig up some of my old homemade mixed tapes, filled to the brim with the Goo Goo Dolls, Savage Garden, Britney Spears, and the like, I'm sure.   We then pumped up the jams, as the cool kids would say {because I'm still cool, right??}, and had a little dance party with the old school boombox as she made her very own mixed tape straight off the radio.  Just passin' on the legacy...

Also, we are fantastic dancers.  It runs in our blood.  obviously.

a tree for christmas

This is the first year that Sam is truly excited for Christmas & Santa & the whole shebang.  So, over the past weekend, we excitedly packed up the car and went on a search for the most perfect Christmas tree.  or actually cheapest {although I'm pretty sure those two words are interchangeable...}.  After picking our tree, we headed over to the barn to drink some hot chocolate and meet the big man himself.  And while we may have been feeling a little too shy to sit on Santa's lap, we were still able to tell him that we wanted a Megatron and an Optimus Prime for Christmas and gladly accepted his candy cane.  Meeting Santa can really work up an appetite, so we settled down on a bench to eat some popcorn and our Santa candy cane.  Suddenly, we remembered that we had forgotten to tell Santa that we wanted a Darth Vader for Christmas too! *gasp!!*  I explained to Sam that we could write him a letter, but oh no, that simply would not do.  So we marched back over to Santa, hid behind mama's legs again, and told him that we needed a Darth Vader too.  Then we ate another candy cane, fed some pretty little goats and headed home to decorate our tree.  Unfortunately, Sam was unable to make it to the decorating of the tree, but lucky for us, Optimus Prime was able to help out.

reason #951 why dads are awesome

I came home from doing a little Christmas shopping on Saturday night to find this:
a christmas-light-bed-time-tent.
who else could you count on to construct such a beauty--& to take a quick snooze in it with you too?

the navigator

hat: aeropostale for $2.75!!!, sweater: Burlington, pants: Ross, shoes: DSW

Recently I met up with some friends for breakfast {can you say the Waffle Window?? Heaven on a waffle, let me tell ya}.  Anyway, my friend texted me the time and place and I was all "I got this".  Now, I know that I am not the best at navigating to new places, I almost always make one wrong turn at the very least, but I plugged the address into my GPS and miraculously made it all the way across the river to SE Portland without one. single. wrong. turn.  I am feeling pretty awesome right about now.  I parallel park my car without a hitch and am at the restaurant right on time {punctuality, also not my best trait}. So proud of myself.  Then I'm waiting and waiting... no friends.  After a couple texts, phone calls and being offered a seat with two women who look like they could easily beat me up and take my lunch money, I found out that I had so proudly arrived on time to the wrong restaurant.  dang.  Defeated, I made my way back to my perfectly parallel parked car and found my way to the correct restaurant. Only a half hour late.  sorry friends...

I then had to leave breakfast about 45 minutes after my arrival to make it to my hair appointment.  Again, I put the address into the GPS and was scheduled to arrive a few minutes early.  I arrive at the destination--not the hair salon. Not even close.  askdasdfhadsk.  I finally make it to my appt 15 minutes late.  sorry hair dresser...

With a record such as this, I think it'd be safe to say that I am not the best at following driving directions.  GPS's are handy-ish, but somehow they always fail me.  Jon says it's user error {pshh..}.  But if I had to pick the all time worst wrong turn story it'd be the one from our Christmas road trip last year.  We were heading back from visiting Jon's family in Nebraska and it was getting close to midnight.  Jon & Sam were both sleeping and I was just cruisin' down the interstate, singing along to the radio, feeling so proud that I was rockin' the road trip driving all by myself.  About an hour later I began to hear references to Denver on the radio.  Crazy that I was getting Denver stations because I was pretty sure our route didn't take us anywhere near Denver.  Or at least it wasn't supposed too.  Turns out there may have been a minor wrong turn involved... with approximately an hour long detour into the wrong state.   sorry Jon...

The GPS clearly has a problem...

hold on to me as we go

One afternoon, I had a grumpy & sad little boy on my hands.  I pulled him onto my lap just as this song came on the radio.  We rocked together and I sang to him, just like we used to when he was just my tiny, toothless, bright eyed baby.  As the song ended, he threw his little arms around my neck, and gave me the biggest squeezy hug that could have gone on for eternity as far as I was concerned.  When he was done, he hopped off my lap with a smile on his face and happily returned to his "study work" {which frequently consists of coloring, reading books, and playing super-heros}.

And now, each time this song comes on, he calls out, "Sing it mommy!  Sing it to me!".
Melts my little ol' mama heart every time.

p.s. Jon thought I should explain how his toe got pierced in the previous post.  He stepped on a piece of wire that was inadvertantly left on the floor a few days prior from a project he was working on.  It's actually quite impressive it went all the way through....

too much excitement for one saturday morning

You'll never guess what I did the other morning at 6:30 am.  Okay, I guess I should really say what Jon did, because it kinda was actually a lot more about him than me, but I'm just so darn proud of myself.  I'm pretty sure someone somewhere is going to bestow the title of "honorary surgeon" upon me for my act of bravery.

It all started when my ringing phone awoke me from my peaceful slumber {which included three-year-old feet in my face and a miniature dachshund sprawled across my legs}.  I grabbed my phone, so confused, it's 6:23. what day is it? Saturday. what's happening? where am I? why is Jon calling me? where is Jon??  I answered, he asked me to come downstairs to the kitchen. What in the world??  I made my way downstairs, half asleep, to find Jon sitting on the kitchen floor with an odd expression on his face.  Ohmygosh, he's having a heart attack, an aortic aneurysm, a stroke, he's paralyzed...

Then he shows me this...
{warning: graphic pics after the jump.  not that kind of graphic pics!  sheesh...}
