a birthday party

We threw Sam a little family birthday party on St. Paddy's day, and he couldn't have been any more excited.  He'd been telling people for weeks that "my birthday's comin' over soon!" and when they would ask how old he was going to be he'd say "three in March!".  So cute. {one grumpy afternoon he informed me that he didn't want his birthday to come over & that he wanted it to stay in March.  Okay buddy, when you find a way to make that happen, tell me first, then go get a patent}.  But now he continues to tell everyone "three in March" and its getting quite confusing for everyone involved.  Anyway, Jon and I stayed up late on Friday {after Sam was in bed} to throw up a few surprise birthday decorations.  The next morning we had him wait on the stairs before the big unveiling until we could get the cameras ready.

Clearly, the anticipation was excrutiating.

His response: "What the heck?.......... I LOVE it!"

The party started at 1:00.  The theme:  loosely associated things that Sam likes including but not limited to trucks, dinosaurs, sheriff badges, & balloons {okay, you caught onto me--there was no 'theme', per say, but that's how we roll around here}.

He had so much fun, the only thing missing was the rest of the fam.
Papa, Mimi & gang, we miss you & wish you could have been here to celebrate with us!

indecision

The weather has been feeling a little indecisive the last couple of days.  While everyone was celebrating the first few days of spring, the weather wasn't quite sure if he was on board or not.

Yesterday: "nope.  sorry fella's, not feelin' it today"

Today: "oh, what the heck... look guys, it's spring!"

better-than-martha-stewart's-banana-bread

That's right, you heard me correctly.  This recipe is better than that of the-queen-of-homemaking herself.

I have tasted many a banana bread, but none had yet to trump the simple & delicious recipe I inherited from my  in-laws.  Then, one day I happened upon Martha Stewart's recipe, and it incorporates sour cream.  sour cream, peeps.  I thought to myself, "that has got to be the best dang banana bread ever invented."  So I made it.  and it was pretty good.  but sour cream and all, it was still not as good as this one.
Now, if that's not research then I don't know what is.  Impressed?  You should be.

So, without further adieu:

better-than-martha-stewart's-banana-bread
3 ripe banana's, mashed
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup melted butter {or applesauce}
optional:  1/4 teaspoon cinnamon {adds a great flavor to the bread} OR 1 cup chocolate chips

*Special Notes:
-I like to mash only two of the banana's and then dice one of them--this gives the bread a little more texture.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Mash banana's with a fork in large bowl.  Add sugar and egg, mix together.
Mix in dry ingredients.
Add butter {or applesauce}.
Mix in cinnamon or chocolate chips if desired.
Line a bread pan with tin foil.  Lightly spray tin foil with non-stick spray.
Pour batter into pan. Place pan on the middle rack in the oven.
Bake for one hour.

Enjoy!

birthday boy

Three years ago yesterday, I held you in my arms for the first time. I spent hours staring at your little face, examining your tiny fingers, big blue eyes & pointy head {don't worry, that went away fairly quickly}; I couldn't believe you were mine.  Your daddly and I had no idea the way our lives were about to change.  We didn't yet know how contagious your smile would be, the pure joy we'd feel in watching you take your first steps, the amazingly small amount of sleep a human being is capable of functioning on, the heartbreak of a scraped knee, or the delight we would take in watching you grow & learn while you explore this amazing world around you.
We love you, little buddy.

Happy 3rd Birthday!!

saturday market

We were so happy the Portland Saturday Market opened back up for the season last weekend, there's always so much to see and do.  And  if you're feeling particularly adventurous you can even indulge in some "free hugs" {which we weren't}.

the bad truth

Whenever I tell Sam something that he doesn't like to hear he furrows his little brow and says, "you told me the bad truth".  Well, yesterday, the tables were turned and Sam told me 'the bad truth'.  I was leaving his room after putting him to bed and he asked me where I was going.  I explained that I was going downstairs to clean up the kitchen.

He said, "who's all comin' over?".
Jon chuckled.

ummm...  why does my child think I only clean the house when people are coming over?  and why does my husband find that to be so humorous?  Good questions, Christine.  So I thought about it {which didn't take too long} and this is what I came up with:  I don't like to clean.  While I tidy things up on a daily basis, I am not a good deep cleaner.  I get behind on all the floor scrubbing, laundry doing, cabinet wiping and toilet cleaning.  And the only time the house gets a really thorough clean sweep is when guests come over.

So, in light of Sam's 'bad truth' I have been motivated to try something a little different around here.
a cleaning schedule.  Bam. I said it.

I came across this one online and thought it sounded totally doable:

I guess even mamas need a little dose of 'the bad truth' every once in awhile.  Or a swift kick in the pants.

sweetness

Please excuse me for just one moment while I finish soaking up a little of this sweetness...

an unusual interest in mud patches and concrete...

...or a couple of desperate parents clumsily maneuvering their way through this whole potty training adventure?

I'll let you be the judge.

this guy...

  • ...has a knack for knowing when I really need a trip to the gym for some time to myself {i.e. feeling grumpy} AND then surprises  me with a sleeping two-bit, clean house, glowing fire, glass of wine & and some cuddle time {stinky sweat & all} when I get home.
  • ...leaves a cup of coffee waiting for me on the kitchen stove each morning.
  • ...gives me a break from the dishes while chatting with me about home projects and outfit posts
  • ...quietly stumbles around in the dark, getting ready for class, on the mornings I have off so I can nab a few more minutes of sleep before Sam comes flying into our room talking a million miles a minute.
  • ...always so appreciative whenever I cook dinner {even if its scrambled eggs or the 2nd night of tacos that week}
  • ...thinks I'm Wonder Woman herself for finally getting Sam potty trained {but just between you and me, it was mostly Sam just finally being ready to do it}
  • ...is the handiest guy I know and always willing to lend me a hand {or more often than not, do the whole darn thing for me because we both know that's what I'm really asking anyway}, from home projects to opening the pickle jar {dang wimpy muscles...}
  • ...somehow manages to do all this while studying 24/7.

This guy is a keeper.

{not to mention obviously being a rock star dad}

victorious!

Wearin' big boy underwear all week and not a single accident for the last two days.
{including his undies' maiden voyage to the grocery store}
