last night

Last night, my husband was hanging some shelves in the bedroom for me.  Sitting on top of my vanity, I chatted with him, handing him the next tool when necessary, watching him work, and joking that if I was left to my own devices with those shelves there was a high probability they would end up more like a slide for knick-knacks rather than a shelf {true story}.

And something about that moment really struck me.  Something about him standing there in his boxer shorts and undershirt patiently helping me with my project after his long day at school.  And that familiar butterflies feeling began to sneak up on me.  But not just the regular ol' butterflies you get before a big test or planning out a much anticipated vacation, but the ones that seem to swell up inside of your chest until it feels so tight it makes you catch your breath.

All the romance movies out there have told me that it takes a sky full of fireworks & some grand show of love to do that, but you know, I think sometimes it's those unexpected simple moments that do it best.

a hint

sweater & jeans: Target, shirt: JC Penney, purse: the Sak, shoes: Keds

I'm standing at the sink doing dishes and from the kitchen table I hear, "Ohhh noooo.... sowwy mommy!"

I look over at the table to see such a sad face looking back at me.  He turns and points his finger.  There, at the end of his outstretched finger and right next to his glass of milk lay a small puddle of white.

"What happened?" I ask him.

"Wellll... that's not snow..." he answered.

We're still working on the whole situationally pertinent information thing.

blackberry vanilla mojito

Due to my complete failure at growing vegetables last summer, I decided to stick with flowers and herbs this time around and I do have to say this has been a much more successful endeavor.  The hydrangeas, oh my, the hydrangeas are at the top of my list, but the mint plant is a close second.  Now it's possible that this may be partly due to the fact that my good ol' mint plant is nearly indestructible and just keeps growing despite all my best efforts to help it along, but also because it has provided us with an endless supply of one key ingredient to one of my favorite summer drinks, the mojito.  We've tried numerous variations and this is one of my favorites.

blackberry vanilla mojito

3 tsp blackberry simple syrup
1/2 fresh lime
several fresh mint leaves
2 oz. vanilla rum
1/2 cup club soda
1/4 cup sprite {I prefer diet}

To make blackberry simple syrup, start by rinsing 1 cup fresh blackberries, drain and then mix in 1 TBSP sugar.  Let stand for half and hour until syrup begins to form at bottom of bowl.

Spoon out syrup and add to highball glass, add in mint leaves, muddle.  Add ice, rum, club soda, sprite and squeeze in lime.  Stir together and serve.

he is...

...the plumber to my drain clogging hair
...the punctuality to my tardiness
...the planner to my spontaneity
...the contractor to my endless home improvement list
...the early bird to my pull the covers over my head for "5 more minutes"
...the extrovert to my introvert
...the negotiation king to my garage sale lovin ways
...the mechanic to my habitual car neglect
...the cheerleader to my disheartened days
...the brave to my scaredy-cat
...the first to give, the first to apologize, the first to make me laugh
...and after all these years, still  the one to hold my heart.

I love you Jon, to the moon and back.
Life is more beautiful with you in it.
happy 7th anniversary

memoirs of the uncool

I found this picture downstairs in my parents' house earlier this week.  And I laughed.
And it reminded me of how in every aspect possible, just how uncool I am, was, am.

That's my middle school bff, Melissa {left} and middle-school-me {right}. Nice bangs.

On my drive back home from my parents' house I kept chuckling about that fantastic picture & got to thinking about some of the many uncool moments from my life.  And here, because I love ya, is a small sampling:

Let's just start with the obvious, my "ugly face" is legitimately ugly.  Cool girls don't actually have ugly "ugly faces", example being Melissa who was infinitely cooler than I.
Hers:  silly--check, cute--check.
Mine:  silly--questionable, cute--absolutely not, on the verge of terrifying--check.

Discovering the genius that is tucking your shirt not only into your pants but also into your underwear in 1st grade.  That sucker wasn't going anywhere with the elastic waistband of my pink  hanes her way undies holding on tight!  It was awesome.
^^Not too long after this wonderful discovery, my dreams were crushed at the hands of Savannah {the Regina George of Foothills Elementary School}, as she very publicly called me out on the swing set that the practice of underwear tucking was not only not widely practiced but also laughed upon.

Thrifting at Goodwill looooong before it was cool.  What's a girl to do when she grows up in the age of t-shirts doubling as billboards advertising their brand when she could only dream of owning clothes from such cool stores?  Hit up Goodwill yo.  And scour the racks for anything brand name.  And buy it regardless of size, because being 3 times too large & a decade out of style was obviously a second priority.

Demonstrating my uncanny ability to recall every lyric from my little sisters' Veggie Tales sing-a-long videos on the bus ride to cheerleading camp.
^^Believing my fellow cheerleaders were laughing with me.

Getting adult braces.
^^Becoming pregnant one month after getting said braces.  There's something about that shiny metal all over the mouth that really brings out the best in a puffy pregnancy face.  Frickin' adorable.

refreshing summer fruit salad

Not "fruit salad", but fruit in a salad.  Thought I'd help you out by making that distinction, just in case you can't read the ingredients list.  Or see the below picture.  You're welcome.  Being helpful, it's what I do.

Anyway... continuing with our family's resolution to improve our nutritional intake {if only chips & cheesy salsa dip fit into this plan...} we discovered a new fave summer salad!  Is it a good indicator that you're got a winner when you eat it for a week straight?

Refreshing Summer Fruit Salad:
  • 1/2 head red leaf lettuce
  • 3 cups fresh spinach
  • 2 peaches, sliced
  • 1 granny smith apple, sliced
  • 1.5 cups sliced strawberries
  • reduced fat feta cheese, to taste
  • balsamic vinegar, to taste

Summer:  when everything wonderful in the produce department becomes affordable.
