date night

jeans & blazer: Gap, top: Target, clutch: Kohls

Jon organized a surprise date night for us this past weekend.  Prior to this, we hadn't had the opportunity to go out just the two of us in several months.  It was wonderful getting to break away and focus solely on each other, no interruptions & not a single conversation regarding Transformers.  We took a stroll around this little lake and went to the movie theater, yes the theater {I'd almost forgotten such a thing exists!}.  But this was no ordinary theater, oh no, this theater serves beer, wine & food while you sit back and enjoy the show, as well as providing live music while you wait for the movie to begin {!!!}.  I felt so schmancy.

We left that night with bellies full of buffalo chicken wrap and a new found resolution to make 'date night' a more regular occurrence for us.  Can't wait for him to ask me out again, or I suppose maybe I should ask him next time... I hope he says yes :)

after one heck of a looong day at work...

....I came home to this.

And my heart melted.

And the 'waiter' asked if I'd like some milk.  "Yes, please" I said.
"Get some," the waiter commands to the man in the kitchen.

The waiter brings out my dinner.  He steals a couple of green beans off my plate as he sets it down.

Still hungry, he climbs into my lap and digs in.

As his tummy fills up, he is able to think clearly again and recalls that all the fine establishments provide coloring pages for their patrons.  Soon a pile of Transformer and super hero coloring books are spilling into my dining space.  "Here.  Color these first," he instructs me.

Then out come the birthday cupcakes.

He blows out the candle before the end of the song.  Then pumps his fist in the air proclaiming, "I winned!"

4 star service at it's best!

and now it's my turn

Today is my birthday.  My 29th birthday.
Sam thinks I'm turning 10.  I think I'll stick with that.

And now I'm off to lunch with the ladies, then to the DMV to renew my license, then cash in on my free birthday burger from Red Robin {woot woot!}, then turn in early so that I can be bright eyed and bushy tailed for work tomorrow.  And that my friends is how a 29th birthday is celebrated.
21 year old Christine would be so ashamed.

a compliment

him:  "You know who you remind me of?"
her:  "Who?"
him:  "This girl I knew in elementary school.  She had long blond hair, all the way down to her butt.  And it was so blond it looked white.  White hair allll the way to her butt.  And her skin was so white she almost looked albino.  Like seriously."
her:  {Thank you??? I suppose I am pretty pale...}
him:  "And she was the nicest person I'd ever met.  Like she was just sooo genuinely nice.  You remind me of her.  I am so proud of you and respect you so much.  I'm lucky to be your husband."

No, I am the lucky one :)

a letter to my husband

Dear Jon,

Today is your birthday!  Your 29th birthday.  And I just have one question: where did the time go??  Were we not just a couple of kids, young and in love, excitedly discussing marriage, life, children, & the future?  And now look at us... just a couple of adults, not quite as young but still in love, still discussing marriage {6 years in and going strong!}, life, children, & the future.

Oh.  Well, I guess things are still pretty good.  Actually, even better I'd dare say.

Yep, you heard me, better, even with the onset of creaking bones, fine lines and gray hairs.  You see, you and I are like a fine wine.  Or at least that's what I hear.  You know me, I don't know much about fine wines.  Give me your cheapest moscato and I'm a happy camper.  But that's beside the point, which is that you are 29 today.  And I am so lucky to have been the one by your side over the last decade, watching you grow and transform and become the amazing man & father you are today. And I feel that even more so now than before, you and I are on the path to becoming who we were meant to be.  Which sometimes {okay, a lot of times} hasn't been easy, but ohhh so worth it.

In the words of the ever-so-wise Velveteen Rabbit,
"You become.  It takes a long time.  That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily or have sharp edges or who have to be carefully kept.  Generally, by the time you are Real, most of the hair has been loved off and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby.  But these things don't matter at all because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

So, here's to you & I becoming.  Our path is still long, but we are on our way, and I can't think of any other hand I'd rather hold on this journey.

And in the meantime, lets live it up, this last year of twenty-hood.  And when we start feeling  bad about the ever impending 30's we can just remember the wise words of the 16 year old girl who works at Chuck e Cheese, "Oh you're not old, my parents are older than you".
Okay, maybe don't think about that.

I love you Jon! Happy Birthday!!
