mahalo.

Remember that one time you were finally sitting down to plan out your little road trip up the Washington coast that was less than a week away, but then ended up snagging a last minute steal of a deal to Oahu instead?  Yeah, me too!

Booked on Sunday, beach-side by Saturday.
 Here's a big 'mahalo' to you, procrastination. Friends 'til the end, you & I.

p.s. this is our first trip ever to the Hawaiian islands!  if you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear 'em!

summer: goin' out with a bang

This summer has been so chalk full of fantastic activities, but we were sorely missing some camping trips.  So, we did the only reasonable thing there was to do:  we packed our bags, bought some marshmallows, loaded up the car and headed out to our favorite camp site.

To me, this place is one of the most beautiful places in the world.  The quiet babbling of the clearest stream you've ever seen, the sound of the breeze blowing the the trees, the fresh air, and carpets of green.  And at night, those stars.  Oh my, those stars.  It's simple serenity is breathtaking.  Now, I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure this is what heaven looks like...

I think Sam agrees :)

only a mother...

jeans: Gap, top: JC Penney, belt: Steve Madden, clutch: Kohls, sweater: Ross

One of my favorite things about motherhood has been the opportunity to watch Sam experience and try to make sense of the world around him.  This often results in pretty ridiculously cute comments on his end {in my totally unbiased opinion}.  And here, for your viewing pleasure, are a few of my most recent faves:

  •  "Ohhhh!  My destiny!!" at rediscovering his favorite Captain America t-shirt that was left behind at Grandma's house.
  •  "Mommy, how many more Curious Georges 'til we get there?"--because, according to Sam, everyone should measure time in Curious George episodes
  • "It musta eaten all it's healfy food and growed big and strong"--regarding the full moon
  • Suggested he could use "a little brudder {brother}" and would name him either "Sammy or Darth Vader"
  •  "I love you in my heawt, my bwain and my bones.  I can feel youw love in my bones."--on a particularly lovey-dovey day
  •  "We can't play any games outside, it's raining.  Only robots can play in the rain, not people."--???
  • "Mommy, can we go to New York sometime? Cuz that's where the super heroes are."
  • me:  "Hey Sam, you know what?"
    sam: "What?"
    me:  "I love you."
    sam: "I did know, but I have to watch my movie."--priorities, people...

the way sam sees it

Sometimes Sam snags my phone and transforms into an impromptu photog.  Looking through his photos, I get a little glimpse of the world from his perspective.

His favorite subject matter by far is 'the superhero'.  Sometimes he goes so far as to lay out a set of mismatching "pajammies" and place a superhero mask just-so, all in order to capture the perfect image...

Second, we've got Sam, the modern art connoisseur, taking pictures of his own art work {of course} as well as intriguing inanimate objects, such as a roll of toilet paper.

Thirdly, and often the most entertaining to find on my phone are the paparazzi pictures {Sam selfies included}.  You can't even try to sleep in on a Saturday morning {I promise there's no shenanigans going on in that pic, unless sleep is shenanigans--which I guess when you're 4 and it's after 7:00am, it is}, pick out your clothes for the day, or wash your face in peace around here.  Princess Kate, you and I have so much in common...

two of my favorite things

family & the coast.

My parents rented a little cabin on the beach a couple of weekends ago for a family getaway & all I have to say is that it doesn't get much better than that.

{grandpa & Sam share the common understanding that now is always the "right time" when it comes to wrestlin'}

{crab hunter & superhero poses}

{my fellow early morning, low-tide adventurers}

 {a "love heart" for mommy.  a smiley face. and an autograph}

{my heart & dad's version of 'making watermelon balls'}

It's near impossible leaving a weekend like that without a smile on your face and your love cup full.
